Efficient and reliable melting of reactive polyurethane hotmelt adhesives: The drum melter for the highest demands

High-performance adhesives play a key role in modern industrial production. Reactive polyurethane hotmelt adhesives (PUR hotmelts) in particular offer an outstanding combination of high adhesive strength, excellent material compatibility and lasting durability. However, to realise the full potential of these adhesives, an efficient and precise melting process is required. This is exactly where our innovative drum melter comes in – a solution that has been specially developed for processing PUR hotmelts and offers users numerous advantages.

What is a drum melter?

A drum melter, also called bulk melter, is an automatic melting system designed for the use of hot melt adhesives in industrial manufacturing processes. The 200kg (55 gallon) glue drums are placed in the device. A heated pressure plate is lowered into the drum by a pneumatic-hydraulically controlled system and melts the hot melt adhesive from the top. The now liquid adhesive is transported by a volumetric gear pump through a heated adhesive hose to the point of application of the glue.

The hotmelt adhesives that can be used include reactive polyurethane adhesives in particular, but also EVA or PO-based hotmelts and pressure-sensitive adhesives, as well as polyethylenes or polyamides. Bulk melters are specially developed for large-scale industrial production, as they offer a high melt and flow rate to provide large quantities of adhesive in a short time. Another advantage of drum melters is that the glue is only melted on the contact surface and the rest of the adhesive in the drum is not exposed to thermal stress. Thanks to advanced temperature control and closed melting technology, the quality of the glue remains constant throughout processing. As a result, it retains its specific adhesive properties for longer and allows longer standing times without the adhesive having to be pumped out.

The right configuration for your needs

You can customise the drum melters in the RAY-MELTER series to suit your specific needs. You can choose from various non-stick coated melting plates. All plates are equipped with a durable sealing ring that hermetically seals the adhesive drum. This means that no air can get into the drum, protecting moisture-reactive hot melt adhesives in particular from premature cross-linking in the melter.

Flat melting plate

With a flat and smooth melting plate, you can achieve a melting rate of 25 kg/h, depending on the reactive PUR hot melt adhesive used, which is sufficient for laminating profiles and small panels even at high working speeds. The advantage of the flat melting plate is the very low residual amount of adhesive, as it allows the drum to be emptied almost completely.

Melting plate with melting ribs

If you are processing larger quantities of adhesive, e.g. for flat lamination and/or postforming of furniture elements or door panels, we recommend choosing a finned melting plate, which offers a melting capacity of up to 38kg/h, depending on the adhesive. This ribbed melting plate also offers an optimum compromise between melting capacity and residual quantity and is therefore very popular with our customers. Choosing the right glue pump

The melted hot melt is conveyed by precise, volumetric gear pumps. We select the model that is precisely tailored to your requirements from a range of sizes with different pump volumes. The glue machine can also be equipped with two pumps to maximise the flow of adhesive or even to supply two laminating lines with a single melter.

The pumps are controlled by AC motors that automatically adapt to the operating speed of the system. This ensures a constant flow of adhesive while maintaining the set glue quantities, even at varying speeds.

The intelligent melter

All hot melters in the RAY-MELTER series are characterised by their advanced control system. A touch control panel with an intuitive user interface allows the operator to enter all process temperatures and parameters easily and centrally. The intelligent control system measures and regulates the temperatures in the various zones, from the melter to the glue hose to the slot nozzle.

The integrated CPU processes all internal processes of the system, such as alarms or safety functions, and provides the operator with further assistance. The adjustable daily and weekly timers, which automatically heat up and switch off the melters, are particularly practical. This means that your adhesive melters are always at working temperature when you start work. The energy-saving mode (Eco Mode), which can be activated and reduces the temperature in the melter to around 80°C, is also very helpful in reducing the thermal load on the adhesive during any work breaks, such as when the system is being converted.

Maintenance and cleaning

Cleaning the drum melter is simplified by the non-stick Teflon coating of the melting plate. It prevents adhesive residues from encrusting and carbonising on the heating plate, which would damage the system and lead to complaints due to adhesive particles under the decorative foil.

Maintenance and cleaning are also simplified thanks to manual pressure control and drain valves, which speed up the raising and lowering of the printing plate and ensure the necessary pressure equalisation in the drum.

A smart investment for maximum efficiency

The drum melter for reactive polyurethane hot melt adhesives is more than just a technical device – it is a decisive factor for efficient, reliable and economical adhesive processing. Companies that value high process reliability, low operating costs and optimum adhesive properties benefit from the sophisticated technology of our system. A bulk melter helps to make the best possible use of resources and maximise the quality of the end products.

Whether for small series production or large industrial production processes – our drum melter offers users the perfect solution for a smooth and economical gluing process.
